I’ll also have art on display and short talk. This is a collaboration with international Japanese calligraphy artist Aoi Yamaguchiwho’ll have taiko drumming. You won’t want to miss this!

Asian Art Museum 10/4

Had a successful day with Lane Wilcken at the Asia Art Museum for Filipino American History day. Activities included talks, art performance and a showing of my personal library of books on prePhilippine scripts and old items. Be sure to check out the Hinabi Project on display. Look out for our next event, unKonference on November 14, 2015 at Fort Mason.

Events recap

filipino tribal tattoo art

Here are some events I took part of the past couple months.

May 16 – Asian Heritage Street Festival @ SF
May 23 – Secret Garden of Eden @ SF
May 30 – Kularts Art Fair @ SF
June 6 – Pista sa Ngyon @ Vallejo
June 21 – Sangdiwa @ SF
June 27 – Kalayaan @ SF

Over the past 2 years, I’ve been slowing down doing Filipino events due to the following:

– Lack of quality of the Filipino festivals
– Increased cost of booths at festivals
– Less attendance
– A change in consumer behavior
– Less interest possibly due to our efforts of getting knowledge of Baybayin to the public has been working

So what’s this mean? It means that I’ve got to change things up by either changing my products or targeting non-Filipinos. It also means that next year, I’ll be focusing on my online school, documentary and producing events. The next one will be on November 14, 2015 at Fort Mason. See unKonference.org for more information.

EVENT: Bill Murray x Baybayin – San Francisco, 8/8/14

Bill Murray Baybayin art

This is a weird one…..Bill Murray X Baybayin! I’m taking part of The Murray Affair: A Bill Murray art show in San Francisco 8/8/14. When I first heard of the show, I thought it would be interesting to see how Bill Murray would look like in Baybayin. “Western” names can be challenging to write. I tried it using the modern method using the vowel killers but it looked too “busy”. I decided to do it traditionally as Bi (Bill) Mu-Re (Murray). I could’ve also done it Me-Re as well but artistically, the composition looked better with the kudlit at the bottom for the Ma character. In the pict, the red marks are the kudlits.

Based on what I’ve seen, most of the art will be portraits. It will be interesting how this pre-Filipino piece goes with the rest of the artwork. To see pix of the event this Friday (San Francisco, US time), follow me on FB/Baybayin.
