Asian Art Museum 10/4

Had a successful day with Lane Wilcken at the Asia Art Museum for Filipino American History day. Activities included talks, art performance and a showing of my personal library of books on prePhilippine scripts and old items. Be sure to check out the Hinabi Project on display. Look out for our next event, unKonference on November 14, 2015 at Fort Mason.

Baybayin art based on your ability to pay

art

I’m experimenting with different pricing structures based on your ability to pay for my 8″x10″ custom Baybayin artwork on watercolor paper. The way it works is that there will be 3 different price levels.

$49.99 – Consider paying at the highest level of a Supporter if one or more of the following is true:

  • You got a good job with great benefits and paid way more than the average person
  • Taking a international vacation wouldn’t be big deal to you
  • You bought a car that’s worth a year or more of tuition at a prestigious university

$39.99 – The Mid-level is probably right for you if one or more of the following is true:

  • You can buy organic carrots without comparing the price to non-organic
  • Don’t need to look at prices before entering a new restaurant
  • Spending $80 on a Friday night out doesn’t phase you

$29.99 – The base level is appropriate for you if any of the following are true:

  • You live paycheck to paycheck
  • You have a considerable amount of debt
  • You have multiple jobs

Call for Artists: 2014 Pistahan Parade & Festival

HEADER_MASQUERADES

August 9 & 10, 2014 (Saturday & Sunday)
Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco

We are looking for Artists to come join us at the Art Pavilion (also the home of Baybayin) this August at one of the largest well-known Festival/Parades in S.F, Bay Area – The 2014 Pistahan Parade & Festival. As we come together to celebrate this year’s 21-year anniversary, the heart of S.F is transformed into a 2-day unforgettable weekend-celebration of Filipino Pride, Heritage and Culture. While thousands of people from all over the community come to cultivate in Filipino Culture, we make it a mission at the Art Pavilion to inspire and educate through art. This is a great opportunity to exhibit your original artwork, make a difference in your community and have fun talking about your art!

For this year’s theme, we want to recognize the Visayan Region, where we hope to raise up Tacloban after typhoon Haiyan last year. Kristian Kabuay, one of the organizers of the Art Pavilion, will be highlighting the “The Masskara Festival” – a festival held each year in BacolodPhilippines. We look forward to making this year’s Pistahan fun, friendly and special!

We encourage all aspiring Artists to inquire about the opportunity!

Contact Kristian for inquiries – (925) 396 5969

I only write Baybayin

This past Saturday, I had an event to commemorate the Marcos Martial Law. I was tasked to create something meaningful in Baybayin. I wrote out the word Kapayapaan meaning Peace in Tagalog. The rest of the text would be from a song Kapayapaan by Philippine reggae band, Tropical Depression.

As I was writing it out on the public sidewalk, people would ask what it said. I would stop and tell them. That occurred a few times so I decided to write the meaning. As you can see its totally missed writing some of the A vowels.

It took me a while to notice it and when I did, I asked myself why did make the mistake again? It happened to me 2 weeks ago at another event.

Here’s the fixed version

I soon realized that I write Baybayin more than the Roman Alphabet. Over the last 15 years, we no longer need to write because of the comforts of technology. The only time I write (non-Baybayin) is when I have to make a quick note on a post-it. I take longer notes on an iPad, I use a word processor to write longer pieces, I email, I text, I Twitter and I Facebook. I rarely write.

Eventually, when we have Baybayin become a font standard in all devices, will this issue happened? I’m sure that other nationalities have come across the same issue where they forget how to write their script but can type it.
